In a shocking incident in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, a 40-year-old mother of four fell victim to gang rape after agreeing to meet a man she had been in contact with via mobile phone. The survivor lodged a formal complaint at Madhabdi Police Station on Friday morning, 6 March. Later the same day, police apprehended the prime suspect, 32-year-old Riday Mia.
The crime reportedly took place on Thursday night near a fish farm pond in Khamardi, Padmarkanda, located in the Kathalia Union of Madhabdi.
The victim, originally from Gopaldi village under Araihazar Police Station in Narayanganj, currently resides in Mendatala, Madhabdi Municipality.
According to the police complaint, the woman had visited the Araihazar municipal market with her daughter for Eid shopping on Thursday afternoon. After purchasing clothes for her daughter, she sent her home before iftar. Several days prior, the victim had communicated via mobile with Riday Mia of Kharia village, Kathalia Union. On learning she was in Araihazar market, Riday requested a meeting.
Later that evening, the woman went alone by auto-rickshaw to Khamardi, Padmarkanda, where Riday offered marriage. When she refused, he reportedly dragged her towards the pond. Three unidentified men, allegedly waiting at the location, joined Riday in assaulting her. The perpetrators then snatched her mobile phone and money before fleeing. The survivor ran to a nearby power loom factory for refuge and reported the incident.
After receiving the complaint, Madhabdi Police inspected the scene. Tracking the mobile number led to the arrest of Riday Mia, who has reportedly admitted to the crime. Police have identified the other suspects, and operations for their capture are ongoing. The victim has undergone a medical examination, and Riday Mia is scheduled to be produced before the court.
