The upcoming Test at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur between Bangladesh and Ireland is shaping up to be far more than a contest for a series win. It marks a momentous occasion in Bangladesh cricket, as veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is set to play his 100th Test match, becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to reach this landmark. Inside and outside the team, this fixture has earned the moniker “Mushfiq’s Special Test,” highlighting the historic significance of the occasion.
Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has lavished praise on his stalwart, emphasising that Mushfiqur’s longevity and consistency stem from his unwavering professionalism, passion for the game, and tireless dedication to improvement. “His professionalism, long international career and desire to represent Bangladesh at the highest level are remarkable. It has taken longer to reach 100 Tests because of the limited number of fixtures each year, which makes this milestone even more impressive,” Simmons said.
Bangladesh enters the Mirpur Test buoyed by a comprehensive innings-and-47-run victory over Ireland in Sylhet, taking a 1–0 lead in the series. Under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Tigers aim to whitewash Ireland and assert their dominance on home soil. Mushfiqur, who was unable to make a big score in the first Test, is eager to mark his centenary with a commanding innings.
Off the field, attention also turns to the Mirpur wicket. Traditionally spin-friendly, Simmons is hopeful it will offer a balanced contest this time. “It’s looking very good, with a hint of green, and further rolling should aid the pacers early on. The first two to two-and-a-half days should be excellent for batting, while spinners will still have opportunities later,” he explained.
Ireland, after a heavy defeat, will be desperate to save the series. While Paul Stirling, Cadyn Carmichael, and Andy McBrine resisted in Sylhet, Bangladesh’s outstanding form, highlighted by centuries from Mahmudul Hasan Joy (170) and Shanto (100) and a combined 14 wickets from spinners Mehidy Miraz, Taijul Islam, and Hasan Murad, made victory inevitable. Changes are possible for both sides, with experienced Ebadot Hossain potentially replacing pacer Nahid Reza and Ireland possibly swapping Craig Young for Gavin Hoeke.
