A tragic and mysterious incident has left the local community of Dhaka’s Jatrabari area in deep shock, following the discovery of a young boy’s body inside a madrasa. The nine-year-old student was found hanging within the premises of the religious school late on Friday night, 20 December, at approximately 11:00 pm local time. Authorities have yet to determine the precise cause of death, leaving questions over whether it was the result of foul play or suicide. A thorough investigation is currently underway to uncover the truth.
Local sources suggest that the child may have died earlier on the day of the incident, though the exact timing remains unconfirmed. The news of his death quickly spread among madrasa teachers, students, and nearby residents, heightening anxiety and concern. As word circulated, a crowd began to gather outside the madrasa, creating a tense atmosphere in the vicinity.
Jatrabari police, together with the Detective Branch (DB), arrived promptly to take control of the situation. Additional law enforcement personnel were deployed, and by 11:30 pm the area had largely returned to calm. Speaking to Kaler Kantho, Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari Police Station, Mohammad Raju, said: “Upon receiving the report, we immediately proceeded to the scene. Officers from the DB and other law enforcement agencies were present. We have conducted preliminary interviews with the teachers, students, and local residents. We are committed to establishing the true cause of this heartbreaking death.”
Residents of the area expressed profound grief and concern over the safety of young students, questioning whether the madrasa’s security arrangements were adequate for children of such a tender age. Police have assured that the full investigation report will clarify the circumstances of the death and determine whether any legal accountability applies. The madrasa authorities will also be held responsible for their oversight, and the family of the child is being consulted throughout the process.
In response, local administration and educational authorities have urged all educational institutions to strengthen child protection measures. Ensuring a safe and secure environment for students is now seen not only as a governmental duty but as a collective societal responsibility. The community continues to await a detailed explanation of the incident, hoping that judicial action and preventive measures will ensure that tragedies of this nature are never repeated.
