NATO’s top military leaders convened on Wednesday to discuss potential long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, a key element in the broader diplomatic push to end Russia’s war.
The virtual meeting, scheduled for 2:30 pm (12:30 GMT), brought together military chiefs from all 32 NATO member states. While few details of the agenda were disclosed, officials confirmed that discussions would revolve around security arrangements for Ukraine in the context of ongoing peace negotiations.
On Tuesday evening, US General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met with European military chiefs to consider the “best options for a potential Ukraine peace deal”, according to a senior US defence official speaking to AFP.
This followed Monday’s high-profile meeting at the White House, where President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders—just three days after Trump’s landmark encounter with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Trump, a long-standing critic of Washington’s financial support for Kyiv, reiterated that:
However, despite Trump’s claim that Putin had agreed to meet Zelensky and to accept some Western-backed security guarantees, officials in Kyiv and Western capitals responded cautiously, pointing to the lack of concrete details.
Even as diplomatic manoeuvring intensified, Russia reported new battlefield gains. On Wednesday, the Russian Defence Ministry announced via Telegram that its forces had seized the villages of Sukhetske and Pankivka in the Donetsk region.
These villages lie close to the sector where Russian troops broke through Ukrainian defences last week, between the critical logistics hub of Pokrovsk and the industrial town of Kostiantynivka.
Reports of civilian casualties mounted on Wednesday as Russian strikes continued across Ukraine:
| Location | Nature of Attack | Reported Impact | Source |
| Kharkiv Region | Drone strike on civilian vehicle | 2 dead (aged 70 and 71) | Regional prosecutor’s office |
| Kostiantynivka, Donetsk | Glide bomb attack on residential housing | Up to 4 people trapped under rubble | Town’s military administration chief, Sergiy Gorbunov |
| Okhtyrka, Sumy Region | Aerial bombardment | 14 wounded, including 3 children | Regional governor Oleg Grygorov |
Zelensky Calls for Pressure on Moscow
Reacting to the fresh wave of strikes, President Zelensky reiterated the urgent need for sustained international pressure on Russia.
“These latest attacks once again highlight the need to put pressure on Moscow, including through sanctions,” he stated.
This combination of diplomatic negotiations and ongoing battlefield escalation underscores the fragility of current efforts to secure peace in Ukraine, while highlighting the immense stakes for both regional stability and global security.
