NATO’s Rutte Acknowledges Challenges in US-led Peace Talks on Ukraine

ODESA, Ukraine, 15 April 2025 (BSS/AFP) – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during an unannounced visit to the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, remarked that US President Donald Trump’s initiative to broker a ceasefire and secure lasting peace in Ukraine remains a difficult endeavour. He further condemned Russia’s relentless pattern of attacks on Ukrainian civilians.

News Body:

Speaking from Odesa following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, NATO chief Mark Rutte emphasised the complex nature of current diplomatic efforts.

“These discussions are not easy, not least in the wake of this horrific violence. But we all support President Trump’s push for peace,” said Rutte, referring to ongoing US-led negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

President Zelensky, while welcoming international diplomatic momentum, underscored the urgent need for stronger military deterrence and defensive systems. He called upon NATO nations to swiftly implement a security contingent that would help deter future Russian aggression in the event a peace agreement is reached.

“The United Kingdom, France, and other NATO members are already laying the groundwork for a multinational security presence in Ukraine,” Zelensky stated. “It is vital that this process be rapid and effective.”

The Ukrainian leader also reiterated his country’s desperate need for enhanced air defence capabilities. This comes in the aftermath of a series of Russian missile attacks that have claimed dozens of civilian lives in recent weeks.

“Absolutely everyone sees how acute Ukraine’s need for air defence systems and missiles is,” Zelensky told reporters. “We spoke extensively on this today.”
