In a significant blow to their aspirations on the global stage, Afghanistan have lost the services of their premier fast bowler, Naveen-ul-Haq, ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup. The right-arm seamer has been forced to withdraw not only from the prestigious tournament but also from the crucial three-match preparatory series against the West Indies scheduled for next month.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed that Naveen’s recurring shoulder injury has reached a critical stage, necessitating surgery towards the end of this month. While the board has remained relatively discreet regarding the specific nature of the ailment, the decision to proceed with an operation indicates a protracted period of rehabilitation.
Naveen’s physical struggles have been a persistent theme over the last year. Since his last international appearance in December 2024, he has been a frequent figure on the global T20 circuit, featuring in South Africa's SA20 and the United States' Major League Cricket (MLC). However, these stints were interspersed with fitness issues, which notably forced him to miss the 2025 Asia Cup. Although he made a brief return for MI Emirates in the ILT20, the injury resurfaced, effectively ending his World Cup dreams.
While the ACB is yet to name a direct replacement for the main squad, they possess a talented trio on their reserve list. The absence of a "death-over specialist" like Naveen—famed for his deceptive slower balls and pin-point yorkers—leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.
| Player | Role | Current Status |
|---|---|---|
| Naveen-ul-Haq | Right-arm Fast | Ruled Out (Surgery Required) |
| Zia-ur-Rehman Sharifi | Fast Bowler | On Reserve List (Leading Replacement Candidate) |
| A.M. Ghazanfar | Mystery Spinner | On Reserve List |
| Ijaz Ahmadzai | Batsman | On Reserve List |
Naveen's absence is particularly stinging given the tactical flexibility he provides. On the abrasive wickets typical of the subcontinent and the Caribbean, his ability to manipulate pace through "cutters" and "back-of-the-hand" deliveries has made him one of the most effective short-format bowlers in the world. Afghanistan’s strategy frequently relies on their world-class spinners to choke the middle overs, leaving Naveen to navigate the high-pressure final overs. Without him, the burden on the remaining pace battery will increase exponentially.
Amidst the gloom of Naveen’s departure, Afghan fans have reason for optimism. National captain and global icon Rashid Khan is cuttting short his stint in South Africa’s SA20 to return to national duties. Rashid, who has been representing MI Cape Town, will lead the side in the upcoming West Indies series. In a testament to his value, MI Cape Town have recruited the legendary Kieron Pollard to fill the void left by his departure.
Joining Rashid in the national camp is fellow spin maestro Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, who is also departing his franchise, Paarl Royals. With their world-class spin duo back in the fold, Afghanistan will hope their slow-bowling prowess can compensate for the unfortunate loss of their pace spearhead.
