Navy Strengthens Security Ahead of Teknaf Polls

In anticipation of the 13th National Parliament elections, the Bangladesh Navy has intensified security measures along the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar. Scheduled for 12 February 2026, the elections have prompted the Navy to enhance patrols, surveillance, and preventive operations to ensure that no untoward incidents disrupt the voting process. Regular foot patrols and public awareness campaigns are being conducted to maintain law and order across the area.

Rear Admiral Md. Moinul Hasan, Commander of the Chattogram Naval Region, inspected the Navy’s contingency operations in Teknaf on Wednesday afternoon. During his visit, he held discussions with local administration officials and representatives of other law enforcement agencies. Later, he addressed a press conference outlining the Navy’s preparedness and security arrangements for the upcoming elections.

“Teknaf is a high-risk border area,” said Rear Admiral Hasan. “It has long been under close surveillance due to the prevalence of illegal arms, drug trafficking, unauthorised border crossings, and human trafficking. These challenges have heightened concerns about maintaining law and order during the elections.”

To address these concerns, the Navy has deployed robust measures to secure the border and ensure a peaceful voting environment. Daily patrols have been stepped up within Teknaf municipality, along major roads, and throughout border areas.

The Navy has also prepared a range of rapid response and monitoring assets, including ships, helicopters, drones, Quick Response Forces, SWADS teams, and body-worn cameras. Intelligence surveillance has been further intensified to preempt potential threats.

Rapid Response Units Quick Response Force and SWADS team on standby
Aerial Surveillance Helicopters and drones deployed for monitoring
Technology Body-worn cameras and enhanced intelligence networks
Historical Operations Since July 2024, successful operations against illegal arms, drugs, and human trafficking

Since 20 July 2024, following government directives, the Navy has continuously assisted local authorities in maintaining law and order. This period has seen multiple successful operations to curb illegal arms, drug and human trafficking, and unauthorised entries. As a result, law and order in Navy-monitored areas has remained visibly stable.

Rear Admiral Hasan emphasised that the primary objective is to ensure voters can exercise their franchise in a secure and peaceful environment. Navy personnel have received comprehensive training, legal guidelines, and codes of conduct for election duties.

Expressing confidence in a smooth electoral process, he said, “Through the joint efforts of the government, Election Commission, administration, law enforcement agencies, and citizens, the upcoming parliamentary elections will be free, fair, and credible. The Bangladesh Navy will continue to perform its duties with integrity and professionalism.”

The Navy’s vigilant presence has instilled a sense of security and trust among border-area voters, and authorities have indicated that even stricter measures may be implemented if the situation demands.
