NCP Leader Resigns, Citing Inability to Uphold Principles

Shamima Sultana Maya, Joint Coordinator of the National Citizens Party (NCP) District Coordination Committee in Rajshahi, has resigned from her post. She took this step after receiving no remedy despite submitting a written complaint to the party’s central committee.

In her resignation letter addressed to the party chief, Maya wrote: “I do not wish to harm anyone nor lodge any direct accusations. However, the truth is that I cannot, under any circumstances, compromise my conscience, integrity, and principles.”

On Tuesday (16 September) at 10:30 a.m., Maya read her resignation in front of journalists at Zero Point, Saheb Bazar, Rajshahi.

Maya had submitted a written complaint to the party chief in August, but no corrective action was taken. In her complaint, she stated:

  • Some of her photos were circulated on social media, falsely portraying her as an “Awami supporter”.
  • These photos were taken during a Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry oath-taking ceremony attended by then-City Mayor A H M Khairuzzaman Liton and his wife Shaheen Akter Reni.
  • Maya claimed she received no party support against this campaign and was facing social and business harm.

Additionally, she alleged that the NCP’s district and upazila-level activities are controlled by the metropolitan committee, preventing district leaders from working independently. She accused one faction of deliberately favouring certain members, withholding administrative support, and insulting her personally. Maya warned that she would be forced to resign if no action was taken.

In her resignation, Maya stated:“Due to false allegations, misleading campaigns, and multifaceted activities, I have realised that it is no longer possible to maintain my principled stance while holding this position. The incidents and the social environment that have developed are now in conflict with my personal values and ethics.”

Recent NCP Developments

  • On 18 June, the NCP formed its district and metropolitan conveners committees.
  • A week later, a clash occurred within the district committee, in which joint coordinator Nahidul Islam Saju allegedly kicked colleague Firoz Alam, injuring him.
  • Following the incident, Rashedul Islam, chief coordinator of the district committee, resigned. No disciplinary action was taken against Nahidul.

MCP Metropolitan Committee Chief Mobashwer Ali denied the allegations, stating:“There are accusations of Awami affiliation against Maya, Firoz Alam, and Saiful Islam. We decided that unless they are removed from the party, the rest of the district and metropolitan members would resign collectively and submit complaints to the central committee. Maya chose to resign early once this became public knowledge.”
