NCP Threatens Journalists with ‘Lock-Up’

Journalists attending a press conference organised by the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) in Rajshahi were threatened with being locked inside a room. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at around 4:45 pm at the Rajshahi Tourism Motel, when two leaders from the party’s youth wing, the National Youth Force, issued the threats.

The press conference was convened following the formation of a new district committee. While the committee’s convenor and other members spoke, a group outside began protesting, labelling the new convenor as an “ally of the Awami League.” During the conference, Suyaib Ahmed, Joint Secretary of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Committee of the youth wing, and chief organiser Md. Mehdi Hasan approached the journalists and warned them that they could be locked inside the room if they did not leave. Suyaib reportedly said, “If you don’t stop, we will lock you in. We have no intention of mistreating journalists, but we will do it.”

Journalists protested immediately, questioning the rationale behind the threat. Tensions escalated, and the two youth leaders eventually fled the scene, with journalists following them briefly. Suyaib later apologised, explaining that his words were said in anger and that there had been no intention to humiliate anyone.

Rajshahi Metropolitan NCP convenor Md. Mobashwer Ali described the incident as “embarrassing and regrettable” and confirmed that the allegations against Suyaib would be reported to the central leadership for action.

The event highlights ongoing internal conflicts within the recently formed 114-member district committee, which has already witnessed resignations and protests over alleged links to the Awami League. The controversy has raised questions about the conduct of youth leaders and the management of political activities in the city.
