Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed his vision of establishing a “Greater Israel” encompassing parts of Egypt and Jordan, as well as the Palestinian territories. He described his pursuit of this vision as a “historic and sacred mission” during a recent interview with Israeli news channel i24.
According to The Times of Israel, Netanyahu emphasised his strong commitment to the concept of Greater Israel, which historically includes the current State of Israel, areas designated for a future Palestinian state, and portions of present-day Jordan and Egypt.
During the interview, conducted by Sharon Gal—a former right-wing member of the Israeli Knesset—Netanyahu was presented with an amulet. Gal explained that the amulet bore a map of the “Promised Land,” representing the territory of Greater Israel.
When asked whether he personally identifies with the Greater Israel vision, Netanyahu replied, “Very much so.”
Definition of Greater Israel
The term “Greater Israel” is used to describe the territories captured by Israel following the June 1967 Six-Day War, which include:
| Territory | Description |
| East Jerusalem | Newly occupied area post-1967 war |
| West Bank | Part of occupied territories |
| Gaza Strip | Part of occupied territories |
| Sinai Peninsula | Temporarily captured region (later returned to Egypt) |
| Golan Heights | Captured from Syria |
Some early Zionist leaders, including J’iv Jabotinsky and other pioneers of Netanyahu’s Likud Party, also used the term “Greater Israel” to include the current State of Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, and what is now Jordan.
During the interview, Gal asked Netanyahu whether he believed he was engaged in a mission on behalf of the Jewish people. Netanyahu responded that he sees himself as part of a long-standing mission: “Generation after generation, Jews have dreamed of coming here, and after us, many more generations will arrive with the same dream.”
He added, “So if you ask whether historically and spiritually there is a mission or a consciousness driving me, the answer is yes.”
This declaration underscores Netanyahu’s ideological alignment with the concept of Greater Israel, reflecting both historical and religious motivations behind his political stance.
