In a significant stride towards the full digitisation of Bangladesh's public transport infrastructure, passengers of the Dhaka Metro Rail can now recharge their travel cards via a dedicated mobile application. The service was officially inaugurated on Monday, 12 January 2026, by Sheikh Mohiuddin, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, during a ceremony held at the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) headquarters in Tejgaon.
The introduction of the Rapid Pass App aims to eliminate the need for long queues at station ticket counters. This digital transition is designed to make the use of smart cards—including both Rapid Pass and MRT Line-6 cards—faster, safer, and more accessible for the thousands of daily commuters in the capital.
The application offers a suite of features beyond simple top-ups. Utilising Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, passengers with compatible smartphones can instantly verify their current balance and review their recent transaction history. To ensure inclusivity, the platform supports a wide array of payment gateways, including mobile financial services like bKash and Rocket, as well as international debit and credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express (AMEX).
| Feature | Details and Constraints |
|---|---|
| Minimum Recharge | 100 BDT |
| Maximum Recharge | 5,000 BDT |
| Platform Availability | Google Play Store (Android) |
| Payment Options | bKash, Rocket, Visa, Mastercard, AMEX |
| NFC Support | Available for balance checking and card reading |
| Refund Policy | Cancellation within 7 days (5% service charge applies) |
| Card Compatibility | Rapid Pass and MRT Pass |
To utilise the new service, commuters are advised to follow a straightforward registration and activation protocol:
Download & Register: Install the app from the Google Play Store. Users previously registered on the Rapid Pass website can use their existing credentials; new users must perform a one-time sign-up.
Card Integration: Upon logging in, previously registered cards will appear automatically. Users can also manually add new cards by entering the unique identification number.
Online Payment: Select the desired top-up amount (between 100 and 5,000 BDT) and complete the transaction through the preferred digital payment method.
Final Activation: Crucially, for the balance to be credited to the physical card, passengers must tap their card at an Add Value Machine (AVM) located at any metro station.
Confirmation: A success message is sent to the registered mobile number once the transaction is synchronised.
Presiding over the event, DTCA Executive Director Dr Md. Mashiur Rahman noted that this app is a cornerstone of the broader "Smart Bangladesh" vision. By streamlining the payment process for the Metro Rail, authorities are paving the way for the Rapid Pass to become a universal payment method across all modes of public transport, including state-run buses and future railway extensions.
This launch follows the successful introduction of web-based recharging at Agargaon station last November, marking the completion of the transition to a fully mobile-first service.
