New Zealand produced a commanding performance to thrash Canada in the ICC T20 World Cup Super Eight clash, winning by eight wickets with 4.5 overs to spare. The Black Caps’ emphatic victory was anchored by explosive batting from Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra, who steered their side comfortably to victory.
Canada, having won the toss and opted to bat at Chennai, got off to a promising start with their opening pair assembling 116 runs. The innings was notably bolstered by Yuvraj Samra, whose aggressive strokeplay kept the scoreboard ticking, and captain Dilpreet Bajwa, who played a more measured role at the other end. Bajwa held one end firmly, allowing Samra to attack with freedom.
Bajwa was dismissed at the end of the 14th over for 36 runs off 39 balls, claiming New Zealand’s first wicket. Yet, Samra continued to dominate, punishing the Black Caps’ bowlers throughout the innings. He eventually fell with just four balls remaining, finishing unbeaten on 110 off 65 deliveries at a staggering strike rate of 169.23, including 11 fours and 6 sixes. His dismissal came courtesy of Jacob Duffy, finally giving New Zealand the breakthrough they sought.
Despite Samra’s heroics, Canada struggled to accelerate, though Dillon Heyliger showcased some late aggression, striking a six immediately upon arrival at the crease. The visitors closed their innings at 173 for four in 20 overs—a respectable total but insufficient against the Kiwis’ firepower.
New Zealand’s chase started unsteadily, losing Tim Seifert and Finn Allen within the first 30 runs. However, Ravindra and Phillips then consolidated with a match-defining partnership. Their unbroken stand effectively guided the Black Caps home with authority. Phillips remained unbeaten on 76 from just 36 balls, while Ravindra contributed a polished 59 off 39 deliveries, taking New Zealand across the finish line comfortably.
