A tragic incident in the capital has drawn public concern after the body of a one-day-old baby boy was discovered inside a cardboard box at Joraine Cemetery in the Jatrabari–Shyampur area.
Police from Shyampur Police Station recovered the unidentified newborn at approximately 2:30pm on Thursday (26 March) from within the cemetery premises. According to law enforcement officials, the infant’s body had been wrapped and concealed inside a paper carton, suggesting an attempt to abandon it discreetly.
Following the recovery, police secured the scene and initiated standard legal procedures. The body was later sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 4:45pm for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death and gather forensic evidence.
Officials stated that the identity of the child and the circumstances surrounding the death remain unknown. No eyewitnesses have yet come forward, and it is not clear who left the carton inside the cemetery or at what exact time it was placed there.
Sub-Inspector Selim Reza of Shyampur Police Station confirmed the recovery, stating that officers responded promptly after receiving information about a suspicious package inside the cemetery. He added that the infant’s body was found inside a sealed cardboard box and was immediately taken into police custody for investigation.
Law enforcement agencies have launched an inquiry to identify those responsible and are reviewing nearby areas for CCTV footage that may assist in tracing movements leading up to the incident. Police have also appealed to the public for any relevant information.
Authorities noted that such cases often require coordination between medical examiners, forensic specialists, and investigators to determine whether the death occurred due to natural causes shortly after birth or other circumstances, including possible criminal involvement.
