Neymar Misses Brazil Squad Again

Brazil faces a critical question ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup: can the team pursue glory without Neymar?

The uncertainty surrounding Brazil’s talisman intensified last night following an official announcement by head coach Carlo Ancelotti. The squad for two upcoming friendly matches against France and Croatia notably excluded Neymar, raising concerns over his readiness for the global tournament.

These preparatory matches were seen as Neymar’s best opportunity to regain form before the World Cup. However, Ancelotti confirmed the harsh reality: Neymar is not yet fully fit. Fitness remains a non-negotiable criterion for selection, regardless of a player’s stature.

Despite missing the friendly squad, Ancelotti has not entirely ruled out Neymar for the World Cup. The Brazilian forward will need to reach peak physical condition to secure a place in the final squad. Ancelotti explained:
“If Neymar is one hundred percent fit, he can play at the World Cup. His physical condition must be optimal. He is absent from this list because he is not fully fit. The final squad is one matter, and these friendly matches are another. I need players who are fully fit. Neymar must play regularly, work hard, and demonstrate his capabilities in peak condition.”

Neymar suffered a knee injury in October 2023 and has not featured for the national team since. He has appeared in four matches for Santos since mid-February, including providing an assist last Monday, but questions remain about whether he has regained his previous spark. Speaking after Monday’s match, Neymar said:
“I am working with the goal of playing at the World Cup. Whether I am selected or not is the coaching staff’s decision. I will continue to support the Seleção either way.”

While Neymar misses out, new talent has entered the squad. Nineteen-year-old forward Endrick, recently in fine form with Olympic Lyon, has received a call-up. Additionally, Brentford striker Igor Thiago and Bournemouth’s 19-year-old Ryan Vithor have been selected for the first time.
