Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. is poised to make a long-awaited return to the national team, nearly 22 months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in October 2023 during a World Cup qualifying match. Following the injury, Neymar had not played for Brazil, and although he was considered for the June FIFA window, coach Carlo Ancelotti decided against his inclusion, citing that the forward was not yet fully fit.

According to Brazilian media outlet O Globo, Ancelotti has included the Santos striker in his extensive squad list, which the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) will submit to FIFA. The 33-year-old has regained strong form at club level, and Neymar may officially feature in Brazil’s squad announcement on 25 August.

World Cup Qualifying Status

Brazil have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, currently placed third in the standings:

Position Team Matches Played Points
1 Argentina 16 35
2 Ecuador 16 25
3 Brazil 16 25

The remaining two rounds of the qualifiers will conclude in September, with Brazil facing:

  • Chile in Rio de Janeiro on 5 September
  • Bolivia on 10 September

Neymar’s Role Under Ancelotti

Neymar has previously faced Ancelotti as an opponent, but now awaits the opportunity to play under the Italian coach. Ancelotti’s squad for these final qualifiers will be announced on 25 August. During the June window, Brazil played two qualifiers:

  • 0–0 draw against Ecuador
  • 1–0 victory over Paraguay

Experienced stars such as Vinicius Jr. and Raphinha have already established their roles in Ancelotti’s setup, and Neymar is expected to reclaim his place once fully fit.

Brazil, five-time world champions, have not achieved ultimate success at the World Cup since 2002 and have faced disappointing exits in recent tournaments. Consequently, Ancelotti is keen to fully prepare the squad for 2026, planning:

  • Six pre-World Cup friendly matches
    • 10 October: vs. South Korea in Seoul
    • 14 October: vs. Japan at Tokyo National Stadium
  • November FIFA window: matches in Africa
  • March next year: friendly matches in Europe (opponents yet to be confirmed)
  • June 2026: two additional friendlies prior to the World Cup draw, with opponents and venues determined by the CBF Technical Committee

After scoring a brace in recent club action, Neymar expressed excitement at returning to the national team. Coach Ancelotti has emphasised that a fit and in-form Neymar will be a key component of Brazil’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
