Nigeria booked their place in the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarterfinals on Saturday night. Goals from Victor Osimhen and Aker Adams ensured the Super Eagles advanced to the last four, ending Algeria’s campaign in Marrakesh, Morocco.
From the outset, Nigeria dominated possession and dictated the tempo of the match. Despite creating several clear-cut chances in the first half, the Super Eagles were unable to break the deadlock. Just eight minutes before half-time, Aker Adams came agonisingly close to scoring with a curling effort that narrowly flew over the crossbar.
The breakthrough came shortly after the restart. In the 47th minute, Bruno Oniemechi delivered a precise cross that Osimhen met with a powerful header, scoring his fourth goal of the tournament. The Super Eagles doubled their advantage ten minutes later. Orchestrating a swift midfield attack, Adams received a perfectly weighted pass from Osimhen, rounded Algeria’s goalkeeper Luka Zidane, and slotted the ball calmly into the net.
Nigeria continued to pressure Algeria throughout the second half and had further opportunities to extend their lead. In the 81st minute, Adams connected with another Osimhen cross, but his header struck the post.
Algeria, despite boasting star player Riyad Mahrez, struggled to impose themselves. Mahrez, who had announced prior to the tournament that this would be his last AFCON, was largely contained and eventually substituted after an hour. Nigeria’s disciplined defence and relentless midfield pressing left the reigning champions with few clear opportunities.
The Super Eagles now face the host nation Morocco in the semifinals on Wednesday. With the prospect of securing a fourth AFCON title still alive, Nigeria will need another exceptional performance to overcome the home side.
