BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has firmly stated that any amendment to the Constitution must be carried out strictly through the Parliament. According to him, there is absolutely no scope for such changes outside the parliamentary process.
He made these remarks on Saturday, 2 August, while speaking as the chief guest at a memorial event held at the ICMAB Auditorium in Nilkhet, Dhaka. The event was organised to mark the fifth death anniversary of former BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Mannan.
Statement Highlights by Amir Khasru
| Statement | Context |
| “Any amendment to the Constitution must be done through Parliament.” | Emphasised the legal and democratic requirement for constitutional reform. |
| “All political parties must obtain a public mandate for any amendment.” | Stressed that change must come through transparent and democratic means. |
| “It is impossible to bring about any changes from outside the parliamentary framework.” | Rejected any extra-parliamentary method for altering the Constitution. |
Criticism Against Anti-Democratic Forces
Amir Khasru strongly criticised those who he claimed are attempting to obstruct the democratic process and upcoming elections. He said:
“Those who aim to derail the democratic process or obstruct the elections clearly do not believe in democracy or in the parliamentary system. In fact, they themselves do not even know what they want.”
Emphasis on Political Tolerance and Respect
Amir Khasru underscored the importance of nurturing tolerance and mutual respect in political discourse. He argued that reforms alone are insufficient unless the political culture itself undergoes a transformation.
“No matter how many reforms we undertake, if we fail to change the political culture, no reform will be effective. We must respect differing opinions and learn to be tolerant. Only then can we move the country forward in unity.”
Call for National Unity in the Interest of the Country
Reiterating the need for unity in matters of national interest, he stated:
“Wherever national interests are involved, unity must be established.”
Response to Rumours of Disunity in BNP-led Alliance
Addressing speculation about divisions within the BNP-led alliance after 5 August, Amir Khasru dismissed the idea of fragmentation:

| Rumour: The BNP-led alliance has broken apart after 5 August. | Response: “I see no disunity. Every party has its own ideology and perspective. We will agree where consensus is possible, and take disagreements to the public. The people are the true owners of the country; the final decision rests in their hands.” |
Amir Khasru’s remarks appear aimed at affirming BNP’s commitment to democratic norms, constitutional propriety, and national unity—while pushing back against accusations of alliance instability and underscoring the role of public mandate in any form of political reform.
