No Risk of Unrest on Victory Day, Parade Will Not Take Place Again

Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs, has stated that there is no risk of unrest on Victory Day, 16 December. He added that, as in the previous year, the Victory Day parade will not be held this time either.

He made these remarks on Wednesday (19 November) at the Secretariat following a security meeting on the overall arrangements for Victory Day 2025, in response to journalists’ questions.

Although some political tension arose after Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death, the Home Affairs Advisor said that no unrest has occurred since the ruling, and there is no possibility of disturbance on Victory Day.

He noted that, as in previous years, the celebrations will proceed smoothly and the situation is expected to be even better than before. However, as there was no parade last year, there will be none this year as well.

He also expressed hope that the national Victory Day can be celebrated peacefully by all.

Regarding a recent incident, he stated that although it is not proper to take anyone without an arrest warrant, last night a journalist was taken from his home by personnel identifying as DB and released in the morning. The Home Affairs Advisor said, “This is the first I am hearing of this; I may know more after investigation.”

On whether the police committed any wrongdoing, he said he would examine the matter first.
