Dr. Asif Nazrul, the legal adviser, has stated that there is no scope for postponing the national elections beyond the timeline announced by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government.
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Tuesday, 19 August, Dr. Nazrul emphasised that despite political parties expressing various statements, the interim government remains firmly committed to holding the elections on the scheduled date.
He said, “The quality and nature of political parties have not changed, which is why they are making statements in political tones. However, there is no room for delay from the timeframe set by the chief adviser. The interim government is resolute in completing the elections on the predetermined schedule.”
Dr. Nazrul further clarified, “It is the government’s responsibility to conduct the elections, not that of the parties. We are fully committed to the process. Every step is well-considered, and the elections are set for February—we will proceed accordingly.”
Regarding institutional reforms, he added that legislation concerning the recommendations for reforming the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Election Commission will be drafted within the next two months. Work on this initiative is set to begin immediately.
