Despite a 2-0 defeat to reigning champions China in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, the Bangladesh women’s football team impressed with their debut performance. Their spirited display has earned them praise and caution from North Korea’s coach, Ri Son Ho, ahead of their upcoming clash.
Bangladesh, ranked 112th in the FIFA standings, faced a formidable Chinese side, the reigning Asian champions and one of the tournament favourites. Despite the gap in rankings, the Bangladeshi players fought valiantly throughout the match, maintaining pressure and keeping the scoreline respectable.
Coach Ri, who leads the highest-ranked team in the tournament, North Korea (7th in the FIFA rankings), observed Bangladesh’s performance closely and acknowledged their strengths. “I watched the China versus Bangladesh match, and I must say Bangladesh is much stronger than I initially expected. Their attack is very rapid, especially during the transition from defence to offence. Overall, they are a fast-paced team. Our defensive line will need to be extremely alert to prevent scoring opportunities,” Ri noted.
The North Korean coach singled out Bangladesh’s offensive threats, particularly three attacking players including Rituparna Chakma. “I am particularly cautious about jersey number 17, Rituparna Chakma, who can launch swift attacks down the left flank. We must prepare our defenders to counter their speed and creativity effectively,” he added.
| Player Name | Jersey Number | Position | Noted Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rituparna Chakma | 17 | Left Wing | Fast attacks down left flank |
| Player 2 | – | Forward | Quick transitions |
| Player 3 | – | Forward | Rapid offensive runs |
Coach Ri emphasised that Bangladesh’s pace in both attack and transition phases presents a significant challenge for North Korea’s defence. “Their speed in both offensive and defensive transitions is impressive. We will need to ensure our defensive strategy is fully prepared to counter these threats,” he explained.
With this cautious approach, North Korea will likely adopt a disciplined defensive strategy against Bangladesh while leveraging their own attacking strengths. For Bangladesh, the praise from a top-ranked team underscores their growing competitiveness in Asian women’s football.
Bangladesh’s debut performance in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup demonstrates that even lower-ranked teams can challenge established powerhouses, signalling an exciting tournament ahead. Analysts note that Bangladesh’s speed, tactical awareness, and key players like Rituparna Chakma could make them a team to watch in the upcoming fixtures.
