North Korea’s Secret Missile Base Near China Poses Significant ‘Nuclear Threat’ to the US

A secret North Korean missile base, situated close to the Chinese border, could potentially pose a nuclear threat to much of East Asia and the United States, according to a report published on Wednesday, 20 August.

The Washington-based think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), revealed that the Sinpung-dong missile base is located just 27 kilometres from the Chinese border.

According to the report:

  • The base may house nine nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) along with their mobile launchers.
  • It is estimated to be one of 15 to 20 ballistic missile bases and warhead storage facilities in North Korea that had never been officially disclosed.

The report’s findings are based on:

  • Satellite imagery analysis
  • Interviews with North Korean defectors and officials
  • Classified documents
  • Open-source data

Experts have warned that the missiles stationed at the base could constitute a potential nuclear threat to East Asia and the United States. Under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, North Korea has rapidly modernised its armed forces, developed new weaponry, and tested ICBMs capable of striking nearly any location in the United States.

These developments violate United Nations sanctions, which strictly limit North Korea’s acquisition of weapons and related materials. However, closer cooperation with Russia and sending troops to Ukraine may have strengthened Moscow’s access to technology and supply lines.

Base Specifications

  • Geography: The base is located in a direct mountain valley, providing natural concealment.
  • Area: Approximately 22 square kilometres (5,436 acres), larger than New York’s JFK International Airport.
  • Construction: Began in 2004, operational since 2014, and actively maintained and expanded since.

Experts believe the base could be equipped with Hwasong-15, Hwasong-18, or other nuclear-capable ICBMs. Its proximity to the border makes it geographically advantageous, but also means that any attack or targeting could have implications for neighbouring China, requiring caution from the United States or other nations.

Regional Security Concerns

The report concludes that this secret base represents part of North Korea’s ongoing nuclear expansion efforts, raising new concerns for regional security and stability in East Asia.
