A student of North South University has been arrested for allegedly desecrating the Holy Quran.
The arrest took place in the early hours of Saturday, 4 October, when Bhatara Police apprehended the student from a residential area in the capital, Dhaka.
The arrested student has been identified as Apurbo Pal, an eighth-semester student of the university. His department has not yet been disclosed.
According to reports, on Saturday afternoon, videos allegedly showing the desecration of the Quran were posted on the student’s Facebook account. The content quickly went viral on the platform, prompting widespread outrage on social media, with numerous users demanding punishment.
Later in the evening, a group of students and local residents gathered outside the student’s residence, protesting and demanding action against him.
Police subsequently intervened to secure the individual and took him to the Bhatara Police Station.
OC Rakibul Hasan of Bhatara Police Station stated: “The student was injured during the public protest. He is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Legal action against him will be decided in due course.”
