Nasiruddin Patwary, Chief Coordinator of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), issued a stern warning regarding the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), stating:
“This intelligence agency operates in Bangladesh using your and my tax money. How much they are spending, the people of Bangladesh cannot know. They have no sense of responsibility, no accountability, no transparency. Their sole job is to intimidate people – if you say something, they threaten to bring you to the Mirror Room. Well, we have already destroyed your Mirror Room. If any more attempts are made in the future, why just the Mirror Room? We’ll tear down the DGFI headquarters itself. We have endured enough.”
Patwary made these remarks on Tuesday (12 August) afternoon while addressing the National Youth Strength (NJS), the youth wing of the NCP, at the Agricultural Scientists’ Institute in Khamarbari, Dhaka.
He further criticised the media, saying:
“Media owners and editors have now begun acting as brokers. Bangladesh needs a free media, but what exists now is the ‘Hasina media’. If anyone dares to speak out, they risk losing their job.”
Addressing the necessity of reform within the DGFI, Patwary said:
“If DGFI must exist in Bangladesh, it must be reformed. If it cannot be reformed, and instead points weapons funded by taxpayers at the people of Bangladesh – 180 million people are still asleep. How many weapons will you point? How many will you kill? We have accepted death; it has already happened. Now, however many times you strike, we will be reborn each time as Abusaid.”
He concluded with a defiant note, emphasising resilience against intimidation and the need for structural accountability within intelligence agencies.
