Liverpool have confirmed the sale of striker Darwin Nunez to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, a move that could pave the way for the Premier League champions to launch a fresh bid for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak.

Nunez joined Liverpool three years ago from Benfica for an initial fee of €75 million ($87 million, £65 million). However, the Uruguayan striker struggled to justify his hefty price tag during his time at Anfield.
Despite netting 40 goals in 143 appearances, Nunez gradually slipped down the pecking order under the management of Jurgen Klopp and his successor Arne Slot.

According to British media reports, Al-Hilal will pay an initial €53 million for Nunez’s services. The Saudi club stated in a release, “Al-Hilal Club Company is pleased to announce the signing of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool FC on a three-year contract.”
Nunez’s playing time was expected to diminish further this season following Liverpool’s acquisition of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz, as part of an aggressive €300 million spending spree. This outlay also included signings of full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

The sale of Nunez will boost Liverpool’s transfer income for the current window to nearly €200 million, following the departures of several key players.
The club is now reportedly focusing on a British transfer record bid for Newcastle’s Swedish striker Alexander Isak. Liverpool’s initial offer of €110 million was rejected, with Newcastle reportedly demanding up to €150 million.
