OC Withdrawn Following Clashes in Hathazari

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hathazari Model Police Station, Abu Kawser Mahmud, has been withdrawn following clashes in Hathazari, Chattogram, between madrasa students and supporters of the Sunni Aqeedah.

Background of the Incident

  • On Saturday, 6 September, a violent confrontation broke out between students of Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Madrasa and Sunni supporters.
  • Allegations were raised that OC Abu Kawser Mahmud failed to take adequate action during the incident.
  • In protest, on Sunday, 7 September, madrasa students gathered at the madrasa field demanding his removal.
  • As the situation grew tense, and amid escalating pressure from the students, the OC was removed from his post late at 11:00 pm on Sunday night.

 

On Monday, 8 September, Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle), Kazi Tarek Aziz, confirmed the matter.

  • Action Taken: OC Abu Kawser Mahmud was officially withdrawn.
  • Replacement: OC (Investigation) Mostak Ahmed has been assigned to take charge of Hathazari Model Police Station.
