A police officer in northern Bangladesh was reportedly assaulted while attempting to execute an arrest warrant, prompting the detention of two suspects and the filing of a criminal case against several individuals.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, 14 March, at the Sholomail Bazaar area in Chandai Kona Union under Raiganj Upazila of Sirajganj District. According to police sources, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mamunur Rashid of Raiganj Police Station sustained injuries after a confrontation with local residents escalated into violence.
Police officials reported that ASI Mamunur Rashid and another officer, ASI Md Aminul Islam, had travelled to the Sholomail Bazaar locality in the late afternoon to arrest an individual named in an outstanding warrant. During the operation, a verbal dispute reportedly broke out between the officers and several locals.
Witnesses stated that the argument intensified when the officers encountered Md Anwar Hossain Sheikh Anu, a former treasurer of the Chandai Kona Union unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). According to preliminary police findings, tensions rose rapidly, and a group of individuals allegedly led by Anwar Hossain launched a sudden attack on ASI Mamunur Rashid.
During the assault, the officer was struck from behind and suffered a severe head injury. His colleague, ASI Aminul Islam, intervened and managed to rescue him from the scene before rushing him to Raiganj Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment.
Doctors at the health complex confirmed that Mamunur Rashid received multiple stitches following the attack. Hospital sources stated that he had sustained a deep wound to the head, which required immediate medical attention.
Following the incident, Raiganj Police conducted late-night raids in several locations within the area. Two suspects were subsequently apprehended and later sent to jail through a court order.
The arrested individuals have been identified as:
| Name | Age | Father’s Name | Village |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monirul Islam | 28 | Abul Hossain | Khundra Daulatpur |
| Jahangir Alam | 40 | Moin Uddin | Kodladighi (Godaipur) |
Police officials confirmed that a formal case has been lodged in connection with the assault. The complaint was filed by ASI Md Aminul Islam, who was present at the scene during the incident.
The case names four accused individuals, including those already arrested, and also lists five to six unidentified persons for their alleged involvement in the attack.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ahsanuzzaman of Raiganj Police Station stated that the officers had gone to the area to execute a lawful arrest warrant when the situation escalated unexpectedly.
He explained that the altercation began with a verbal disagreement with local residents. At one stage, ASI Mamunur Rashid was struck on the back of the head, causing him to collapse.
“The injured officer was immediately rescued by his colleague and taken to Raiganj Upazila Health Complex. A case has been filed, and two suspects have already been arrested. They have been produced before the court and sent to jail,” the OC said.
Police authorities indicated that further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects who allegedly participated in the assault. Additional security measures have also been considered in the area to prevent further disturbances during law enforcement operations.
Local law enforcement officials emphasised that attacks on police personnel performing official duties constitute serious criminal offences and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.
