On Canadian soil, Dolly Sayantani reported the news herself

Renowned singer Dolly Sayantani, once a household name in Bangladesh’s music scene, is currently based in Canada, where she continues to lend her voice to new songs. In a recent interview for the ‘Hello’ section, she spoke candidly about her ongoing projects, her life abroad, and her enduring connection to her home country.

Dolly’s musical journey began while she was in class nine with the release of her debut album, He Jubok, which quickly captured the hearts of listeners. Over the years, she has showcased her versatility by performing both modern tracks and traditional folk music. To date, she has released fifteen solo albums, leaving an indelible mark on the Bangladeshi music industry.

Speaking about her life in Canada, Dolly shared, “I frequently perform at shows here, and the response has been heartwarming. When I first arrived, I didn’t anticipate staying long. Once I realised I would be here for an extended period, I brought my harmonium and music books from Bangladesh to maintain my routine.”

Contrary to assumptions that living abroad might limit her musical output, Dolly revealed that she continues to record songs from Canada. “I have a studio near my home, and I record tracks here and send them back to Bangladesh. Despite being far from home, I never feel disconnected because I stay actively engaged with the music scene back home,” she said.

On performing in Canada, she remarked, “I have experience performing here before, and I truly enjoy it. The audience often joins in singing along, which creates a unique and joyful energy that’s different from performing elsewhere.”

Dolly also addressed the trend of reimagining classic hits. “I was approached by several companies about reviving my old songs. Initially, I hesitated, concerned whether new arrangements could occupy the special place these songs hold in fans’ hearts. But seeing the positive reception for others’ renditions encouraged me to participate. I recently re-recorded He Jubok, and plan to reimagine my other popular tracks sequentially,” she explained.

She has also launched her own YouTube channel, aiming to share music regularly. “It’s not a massive project, but I want to release songs consistently. So far, my daughters’ songs are up, and the channel has over 100,000 subscribers. I’m seeking technical support to manage the channel more effectively,” she added.

Regarding her daughters, Dolly said, “My three daughters—Kotha, Rimjhim, and Faiza—are passionate about music, though their studies often limit their time. I try to support them while balancing my own projects.”

Dolly plans to return to Bangladesh by mid-year, primarily to be with her daughters, who are adjusting to a new environment and need her support. “Their father is a busy businessman and cannot devote much time, so it falls to me,” she noted.
