On the occasion of National Martyrs’ Day, the event is safe and poses no risk: DMP Commissioner.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali has assured the public that there are no security concerns regarding the upcoming observances of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.

Speaking at a press briefing today at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital, the DMP Commissioner outlined the security arrangements for the ceremonies. The briefing was specifically held to inform the public and media about safety measures during the national commemorations.

The events will formally commence tomorrow, Saturday, with the laying of floral wreaths at 12:01 a.m., marking the beginning of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day. Citizens are requested to follow designated routes to enter and exit the Central Shaheed Minar to maintain order and ensure safety.

According to DMP instructions:

Entrants should approach the Central Shaheed Minar via Polashi Mor and Jagannath Hall Crossing.

Exiting the premises should be through Ramna Crossing towards Doel Chattar or Chankharpul.

No other routes will be permitted for access or egress.

Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali further stated that the President and the Prime Minister will pay tribute at the Central Shaheed Minar at the first hour of 21 February, followed by important state officials and foreign diplomats. The site will open for the general public at approximately 12:40 a.m., and patience from attendees is requested until then.

The Commissioner emphasised that, although there is no specific threat, law enforcement personnel—including SWAT teams, Dog Squads, Bomb Disposal Units, and Crime Scene Units—will remain on standby. Additional intelligence monitoring and cyber surveillance will also be conducted. Attendees are strictly prohibited from bringing sharp objects, flammable materials, or explosives.

Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Anisur Rahman detailed seven key traffic diversions to facilitate smooth entry and exit:

Diversion Point Direction / Notes
Shahbagh Crossing Entry/exit management
Nilkhet Crossing Traffic rerouting
Shahidullah Hall Crossing Entry/exit management
High Court Crossing Traffic rerouting
Chankharpul Crossing Exit only after tribute
Polashi Crossing Main entry route

Layered Security Measures

Earlier today, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) held a separate briefing, where Director General K. M. Shahidur Rahman confirmed multi-layered security arrangements for the Central Shaheed Minar. The entire area will be monitored via 64 CCTV cameras, ensuring comprehensive surveillance throughout the event.

The RAB chief also addressed the country’s overall law and order situation, warning that any attempts to exploit public gatherings for coercion or disruption would not be tolerated. Authorities will ensure that normal civic activities remain uninterrupted during the observances.

With these measures, authorities have reassured citizens that the commemoration of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day will proceed safely and peacefully, honouring the memory of the martyrs with due solemnity.
