One person has died after falling ill from eating food at a wedding house in Dhamoirhat, Naogaon. Seventeen others, including Joydev, Rehana Begum, Babu, Zahidul Islam and Mojabber Rahman, are currently undergoing treatment.
The incident occurred on Sunday (23 November) night in Agradigun village of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Jamal Hossain (38), son of Dalil Uddin of the same village. It is known that Jamal was staying at the bride’s father’s house for the wedding ceremony.
Local sources said that food was arranged for around 300 guests at the wedding of Amirul Islam’s daughter. Shortly after eating, many guests experienced severe stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Several were seen rushing to the toilet in groups. As the condition of many worsened, they were taken to Patnitala Upazila Health Complex on Monday (24 November) morning. Jamal Hossain, who had been admitted there, was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) as his condition deteriorated. However, he died before reaching Rajshahi.
Local Union Parishad Chairman Ismail Hossain Mostak said that although they have assumptions about the cause of death, they are not certain where the food came from. Some said the food was prepared at the wedding house, while others claimed food had also been brought from a hotel, which might have caused the issue.
Dr Khalid Saifullah, Patnitala Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said that 18 people were admitted to the hospital after falling ill from eating polao. Of them, 17 are still under treatment. One reportedly died on the way to Rajshahi. Initially, the incident appears to be a case of food poisoning.
Dhamoirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Imam Zafar said that none of the victims had reported the matter to the police. However, upon learning about the incident through the media, police were sent to the scene.
