Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka will face Canadian teenage wildcard Victoria Mboko in a much-anticipated championship clash at the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal, after both secured hard-fought semi-final victories on Wednesday.

Osaka, representing Japan, is in pursuit of her first tour-level title since the 2021 Australian Open. She overcame Denmark’s Clara Tauson 6-2, 7-6 (9/7), saving two set points in the second-set tiebreak. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Mboko pulled off a spectacular comeback to defeat ninth seed and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4), saving one match point along the way.

Naomi Osaka’s Path to the Final

Osaka’s semi-final victory against Clara Tauson was a display of resilience and mental fortitude. She breezed through the first set but faced stiff resistance in the second. Tauson, coming off impressive wins against Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek and Australian Open winner Madison Keys, twice broke back to extend the contest to a tiebreak.

  • Tiebreak Drama: Tauson took a 6-4 lead, earning two set points. However, she failed to capitalise, and Osaka, after saving one match point herself, claimed the final two points to seal the win.

“It’s been a long journey since my last title. I’m grateful to be back in a final,” said Osaka, who has looked rejuvenated following a recent coaching reshuffle.

This will mark Osaka’s first WTA 1000 final since Miami 2022, and her best run since returning from maternity leave in 2024.

Victoria Mboko: From Underdog to Montreal Finalist

Mboko’s fairy-tale run has captivated home fans and redefined expectations. Entering the season ranked outside the top 300, the Canadian has climbed steadily through the ranks, reaching world No. 85 prior to the tournament. Regardless of the final outcome, she is now guaranteed a place in the top 40.

  • Injury and Comeback: The match against Rybakina wasn’t without drama. Mboko suffered a fall in the third set, injuring her right wrist. Despite this, she rallied, driven by the energy of the Canadian crowd.

“After I had that fall, I wasn’t in the greatest spirits,” Mboko admitted.
“But I kept my composure and stayed patient in the key moments.”

  • Match Highlights:
    • After trailing by a set and an early break in the decider, she broke back in the 10th game to level the set.
    • Rybakina, hampered by two double faults, was broken to love in the next game.
    • Mboko then held her nerve in the tiebreak, winning the final three points of a tension-filled decider.

“Anything can happen,” a visibly elated Mboko told the crowd.
“I had everyone supporting me and pushing me—this means the world.”
