Over 200 human rights activists from 37 countries have been detained by Israel from the Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla, Global Sumud Flotilla. In an aggressive assault on the fleet, Israeli forces have intercepted at least 13 vessels, according to the flotilla’s spokesperson, Saif Abukeshek, who shared the information via Instagram.
On Thursday (2 October), Al Jazeera reported that Israeli forces targeted the flotilla attempting to break the Gaza blockade, detaining at least 13 ships. Among the detained passengers:
| Country | Number of Activists Detained |
| Spain | 30 |
| Italy | 22 |
| Turkey | 21 |
| Malaysia | 12 |
| Other 33 Countries | Remaining detainees |
Despite the detention and encirclement of vessels, the mission has not been halted. Approximately 30 vessels are still attempting to reach Gaza.
In response to Israel’s blockade of the flotilla, Italy’s largest labour union has called a general strike to protest the interception.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, which departed from Spain on 31 August, represents the largest maritime mission to Gaza to date. The fleet consists of 44 ships carrying 497 passengers. Previous attempts to deliver aid by sea in June and July had also been intercepted by Israel.
| Mission Details | Information |
| Departure Date | 31 August (from Spain) |
| Total Ships | 44 |
| Total Passengers | 497 |
| Previous Attempts | June and July – blocked by Israel |
The flotilla continues its efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza despite ongoing interceptions, highlighting the persistent international solidarity with the region.
