Over 445,000 Bangladeshi Expats Register for Postal Voting

For the upcoming 13th National Parliament election and referenda, over 445,000 Bangladeshi expatriates have registered to vote through the Postal Vote BD app, marking a significant milestone in the country’s electoral process. This information was confirmed on Tuesday at 9:30 pm via the Election Commission’s (EC) official website.

As of Tuesday evening, a total of 445,026 overseas voters had completed registration. Of these, 417,359 were male and 27,665 were female. Meanwhile, 6,608 registrants are awaiting approval, and 438,418 applications have already been validated by the commission.

For the first time, the Election Commission is introducing an IT-supported postal ballot system. This initiative will allow expatriates, legally detained individuals, and personnel assigned to election duties to cast their votes remotely. Registration for the postal vote began on 19 November and will continue until 25 December.

The EC has clarified that once approved, postal ballots will be dispatched to the registered addresses of voters. Voters can then cast their votes and return them in sealed envelopes to the respective returning officers.

Registrations are currently open across a wide range of countries, including South Korea, Japan, South Africa, China, Egypt, Mozambique, Libya, Mauritius, Hong Kong, Brazil, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Liberia, Botswana, Kenya, Rwanda, Algeria, Angola, Tanzania, Somalia, Ghana, Guinea, Morocco, South Sudan, Chile, Sierra Leone, Ecuador, Taiwan, Argentina, Australia, Central African Republic, Gambia, Peru, Zimbabwe, USA, Saudi Arabia, and several others.

According to EC officials, previous postal ballot systems proved largely ineffective. The adoption of an IT-supported platform is expected to streamline the voting process and improve participation from abroad. The commission has reported a strong response from expatriate voters so far. Registration trends for legally detained individuals and election personnel will be closely monitored to gauge interest in these categories.

The Election Commission is preparing for voting in the first half of February 2026 for the 13th National Parliament elections and associated referenda. Officials have set an ambitious target of mobilising five million expatriate voters for this electoral cycle, signalling a historic expansion of overseas participation in Bangladesh’s democratic process.
