As Bangladesh prepares for the 13th National Parliamentary Election and accompanying referendum on 12 February, female voter participation is poised to reach an unprecedented milestone. According to the latest data released by the Election Commission (EC), out of a total 127,711,793 registered voters, 62,885,200 are women, while male voters number 64,825,361.
This election is also notable for the significant recognition of the third gender community. For the first time on such a large scale, 1,232 transgender voters—commonly referred to as hijras—will exercise their right to vote. The move has been widely hailed as a progressive step towards a more inclusive electoral process in Bangladesh.
A closer look at voter distribution across constituencies reveals substantial disparities. Gazipur-2 emerges as the country’s largest constituency with 804,333 registered voters, whereas Jhalokathi-1, with only 228,431 voters, is the smallest.
| Constituency | Total Registered Voters | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Gazipur-2 | 804,333 | Largest electoral area |
| Jhalokathi-1 | 228,431 | Smallest electoral area |
| Women Voters | 62,885,200 | Record-breaking milestone |
| Male Voters | 64,825,361 | Slightly higher than women |
| Third Gender | 1,232 | First large-scale inclusion |
The EC has assured that extensive measures have been put in place to guarantee the safety and smooth participation of female voters. Dedicated women’s polling booths will be staffed with sufficient female polling officers and security personnel to ensure a comfortable voting environment.
Voting will take place across more than 42,000 centres nationwide, commencing early on 12 February. On the same day, citizens will also cast their votes in the parliamentary elections and participate in the national referendum on key issues. The EC has expressed optimism that the enthusiastic participation of women and young voters will contribute to a vibrant, peaceful, and festive election day.
All administrative and technical arrangements have been completed to uphold a transparent, free, and fair election, reflecting the nation’s commitment to democratic governance.
