Over a hundred workers fall ill again at a Tangail garment factory.

In a worrying development in Tongi, Gazipur, more than a hundred workers at Export Village Limited, a prominent garment factory, were admitted to hospital after falling ill while on duty on Wednesday morning. Reports suggest that the workers began experiencing sudden health issues while performing their regular tasks, prompting an urgent response from factory staff and local authorities.

According to eyewitness accounts and police sources, the situation escalated quickly as workers started collapsing one after another, creating a state of panic inside the factory premises. Many were swiftly transported to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Hospital sources confirmed that the affected workers included both men and women, with common symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, shortness of breath, and general discomfort.

This incident follows a similar outbreak at the same factory last Monday, when at least twenty workers fell ill. That earlier episode coincided with a protest inside the factory, during which employees staged a work stoppage demanding one month’s overdue wages.

The Tongi East Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mehedi Hasan, stated that the immediate cause of the mass illness remains unclear. “We are investigating the matter to determine why so many workers fell ill simultaneously,” he said. Following the incident, additional police personnel were deployed to the factory to maintain order. Medical care for all affected employees is being provided as a priority.

Labour activists have expressed concern over recurrent health hazards in the garment industry, particularly in factories with high production pressure and limited ventilation. The Export Village Limited management has yet to release an official statement regarding potential causes or preventive measures.

The following table summarises the incidents at Export Village Limited over the past week:

Date Number of Workers Affected Context / Cause Hospitals Involved
Monday, 8 Jan 20 Work stoppage for unpaid wages Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College, others
Wednesday, 13 Jan 100+ Sudden illness during work Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College, nearby hospitals

This recurring pattern has raised questions about workplace safety and workers’ health standards in the garment sector, calling for urgent inspection and remedial measures.
