The Bangladesh Army has seized a microbus carrying a substantial cash sum of Tk 10,49,000 in Chittagong, while detaining three individuals in connection with the incident. The operation took place on the night of Tuesday in Abdul Barihat, located in the Chandanaiṣh area of Chittagong-14 constituency.
Acting on intelligence, a team led by Army Captain Khaled intercepted the vehicle and recovered both the cash and the microbus. According to the Chandanaiṣh police station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Ilyas Khan, the seized items were subsequently handed over to the local police station following instructions from the Returning Officer.
The OIC clarified that, as of now, no formal arrests have been made. Preliminary investigations suggest that the recovered money belongs to an independent candidate contesting the Chittagong-14 seat. The authorities plan to verify the origin and legitimacy of the funds in accordance with the rulings of the election tribunal before taking further legal action.
Chittagong-14’s Assistant Returning Officer, Rajib Hossain, confirmed that a formal investigation into the source of the seized cash is underway. “After completing the necessary verification procedures, appropriate measures will be taken under the guidance of the Election Commission,” he stated.
A video of the seizure has circulated widely on social media, showing army personnel surrounding a man counting the cash beside the microbus. When questioned about his identity, the individual introduced himself as the estate manager of Mizanul Haque Chowdhury.
Mizanul Haque Chowdhury is currently contesting the Chittagong-14 seat as an independent candidate, with the football symbol. The incident has sparked significant discussion in the local community, highlighting the heightened vigilance of law enforcement agencies in the lead-up to the election.
