Almost two months after undergoing knee surgery, Neymar Jr. has made a stirring return to the pitch, immediately drawing attention. On Sunday, he came on as a substitute for Santos FC in their emphatic 6–0 victory over Velo Clube. While he missed a golden opportunity to score, his performance left Santos’ coach Joan Pablo clearly satisfied.
The win against Velo Clube secured Santos’ place in the Campeonato Paulista quarter-finals, an important step in their campaign. Neymar, meanwhile, confirmed that his preparation ahead of the FIFA World Cup is progressing positively, signalling optimism for the months ahead.
Reflecting on Neymar’s contribution, Pablo stated:
“I believe everyone needs Neymar—both Santos and the national team. If he plays well, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti will be pleased. Everything is interconnected.”
Neymar last donned the Brazilian jersey in October 2023. Though many regard his peak years as behind him, Pablo still considers the 33-year-old forward among the very best.
“He is a world-class player,” Pablo continued. “He still possesses immense drive. Whether he spends only a short time on the pitch or is training, he wants to fight, to win. That mentality is what keeps him motivated.”
In recent years, Neymar has endured a series of injuries that disrupted his form, leading him to conclude his European and Saudi football chapters and return to Santos. Despite these setbacks, his dream of competing in another World Cup remains undiminished, underlining his resilience and enduring ambition.
| Year | Club / National Team | Event / Injury | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Brazil | Last international match in October | Ended year without national appearances |
| 2023–2024 | Paris Saint-Germain / Saudi Club | Recurring injuries | Limited playing time, form affected |
| 2025 | Santos FC | Returned post knee surgery | Scored no goal in comeback match but showed positive performance |
| 2026 | Brazil | Preparing for World Cup | Training and matches progressing positively |
Neymar’s return not only strengthens Santos’ attacking options but also adds a crucial boost for Brazil as they prepare for the global stage. The combination of experience, skill, and renewed determination makes him a player to watch in the upcoming tournaments.
