Pakistan is not boycotting the World Cup

Amid swirling rumours that Pakistan might boycott the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has categorically dismissed such claims. By announcing a strong 15-member squad for the tournament, the board emphasised that Pakistan has no hesitation in participating and is fully committed to competing on the global stage.

Speculation about a potential boycott erupted following the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to include Scotland in the tournament in place of Bangladesh. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi publicly voiced his discontent over the ICC’s choice, noting that India and Pakistan had previously benefited from the so-called “hybrid model” or alternative venue arrangements. He suggested that a similar approach should have been applied for Bangladesh, thereby avoiding their exclusion.

Naqvi further mentioned that discussions regarding a boycott had been held with the Pakistani government. “The ultimate authority to make a final decision rests with the government,” he said. “At the time, the Prime Minister was abroad, and no definitive position had been communicated.”

However, the announcement of Pakistan’s World Cup squad the following day dispelled any doubts about their participation. Analysts suggest that the PCB’s initial statements were largely symbolic, intended to express solidarity with Bangladesh and to subtly challenge the ICC’s decision. There was no genuine plan to withdraw from the competition.
