Paris Saint-Germain claim the trophy, shattering Marseille’s hopes

In a heart-stopping climax to the French Super Cup in Kuwait, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) snatched victory from Marseille in dramatic fashion, ending the southern club’s 14-year wait for silverware. Marseille had looked poised to secure the trophy, taking the lead with just three minutes remaining in regulation time, only for PSG to level in the dying seconds and triumph in the ensuing penalty shootout.

The match began with early momentum for PSG, who opened the scoring in the 13th minute through a precise strike from Ousmane Dembélé. Marseille responded in the second half, earning a penalty which Mason Greenwood calmly converted to equalise, bringing the score to 1–1.

As the clock ticked past the 87th minute, it seemed Marseille would hold onto their slender lead. Hamed Traoré’s inswinging cross from the left wing led to a calamitous own goal by PSG defender Willian Pacho, putting Marseille ahead 2–1 and sending their supporters into raptures. For much of stoppage time, the French side clung to the advantage, daring PSG to respond.

But PSG refused to capitulate. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Gonzalo Ramos scored a dramatic equaliser, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. In the tense tiebreaker, PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier emerged as the hero, saving the first two penalties. Ultimately, it was Kylian Mbappé’s fellow striker, Désiré Doué, who converted the decisive penalty, sealing a 4–1 shootout victory and sparking jubilant celebrations for the reigning league champions.

Marseille’s despair was palpable. Many of the players were seen struggling to hold back tears as their dream of lifting the French Super Cup for the first time in 14 years slipped away. For PSG, this victory marked their 13th Super Cup triumph in the last 14 editions, further cementing their dominance in French football.
