Patuakhali Attack Leaves Two Lawmen Critically Wounded

In a shocking and premeditated assault in Laukathi, Patuakhali Sadar, two law enforcement officers were grievously injured when armed assailants attacked them with homemade weapons. The victims include Shahidul Islam, a member of the Barishal District Special Branch (DSB), and his younger brother Anichur Rahman Monir, a prison department officer.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 10 January, in Jamura village under Laukathi Union. Local sources and police reports indicate that the attackers, allegedly members of a politically influential Awami League family, deliberately blocked the officers’ path before launching a violent onslaught using rams and iron rods. Shahidul Islam sustained severe injuries to his head and hands, resulting in significant blood loss. Monir was also injured, although his condition is comparatively stable.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attack appeared carefully orchestrated, suggesting prior knowledge of the officers’ movements. Prompt action by local residents enabled both men to be transported to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. Doctors confirmed that Shahidul Islam’s injuries are serious and he remains under close observation.

Patuakhali Sadar police station’s Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman confirmed the incident, stating: “A formal case has been filed. We are conducting a thorough investigation, and legal action will follow against the perpetrators.”

Authorities have indicated that the suspected attackers are being actively pursued, and additional security measures have been implemented in the area to prevent further incidents. District police officials also visited the hospital to assess the situation and ensure the safety of the injured officers.
