International peacekeepers are currently engaged in intense combat with radical Islamist militants as they attempt to regain control of a key Somali town, according to the African Union mission in the country.
Since early 2024, the Al-Qaeda-linked group Al-Shabaab has seized dozens of towns and villages, effectively reversing nearly all the progress made by Somalia’s army throughout 2022 and 2023.
Offensive to Retake Bariire
On Friday, the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) launched a major operation to reclaim Bariire, a strategically important town situated approximately 100 kilometres west of Mogadishu in the Bas-Shabelle region.
Bariire, home to a significant military operational base, fell to Al-Shabaab in March without resistance after Somali troops withdrew. The militants also destroyed a critical bridge that served as a vital supply route for the military.
Casualty Reports and Fighting Status
Contradicting Al-Shabaab’s claims of heavy Somali losses during attempts to recapture Bariire, AUSSOM stated on Sunday that the clashes had resulted in the deaths of 50 Al-Shabaab militants, with many others seriously wounded.
Despite deploying more than 10,000 troops across Somalia, AUSSOM and the Somali army have suffered a series of setbacks against Al-Shabaab in recent months.
