Renowned Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra is making his debut as a film producer with the musical romantic drama Gustakh Ishq. Directed by Vibhuti Puri, the film features a captivating on-screen chemistry between actors Vijay Varma and Fatima Sana Shaikh. The trailer was unveiled last Monday at a glamorous event in a Mumbai multiplex, drawing attention for its star-studded ensemble, which also includes veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah.
The film’s soundtrack promises to be equally enchanting, with music composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and lyrics penned by celebrated poet Gulzar. While Fatima Sana Shaikh is often seen in multi-starrer films—most recently in Anurag Basu’s Metro In Dino—she takes centre stage as the lead actress in Gustakh Ishq. Speaking at the trailer launch, Fatima reflected on her journey in the film industry: “I’ve played a variety of roles since childhood, starting as a child artist. There was a misconception that child artists couldn’t become leading actresses. I kept auditioning to break that notion.”
Having spent several years in television, Fatima recalls the rigours of daily schedules and unpaid absences, which shaped her professionalism. “I vowed that if I ever got a lead role, I would treat everyone with respect. Working alongside Naseerji and Manish has been a privilege,” she said.
Gustakh Ishq is a pure romantic film, and Fatima expressed her delight at portraying love on screen. “We rarely say we ‘fall in love’. Falling in love means losing control. No matter how much we try to restrain ourselves, we forget everything in love. Even toxic love, we immerse ourselves in, because love demands total emotional surrender. This film gave me a chance to convey that feeling.”
Sharing her experience working with Naseeruddin Shah, she added, “I was nervous at first, wondering what he would think of me. But he is humble and experienced. He taught me to leave the ‘performative zone’ and return to genuine moments. I learn something from him every day.”
Vijay Varma, who has often been seen in darker roles, appears as a romantic lead for the first time. Commenting on modern relationships, he said, “Everything today is labelled—ghosting, toxic—but the essence of love remains unchanged. Only the way we express it has evolved.”
Gustakh Ishq, which interweaves romance, tenderness, realism, and life’s struggles, is set to release in cinemas on 28 November, promising audiences an emotionally resonant cinematic experience.
