People Will Not Accept Any Obstruction to Elections: Salahuddin Ahmed

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has asserted that the Constitution of Bangladesh contains no reference to Proportional Representation (PR). He emphasised that elections in every parliamentary constituency must be held through direct votes of the people, and warned that the nation would not tolerate any form of obstruction or manipulation regarding the electoral process.

He made these remarks on Saturday, 30 August, while inaugurating the biennial conference of the Netrokona District BNP, held at Moktarpara Field in Netrokona town.

Salahuddin Ahmed stated: “We have shed blood, staged movements, and overthrown fascism in order to restore the people’s right to vote. Yet, some forces are still conspiring to undermine that very right. The next National Parliamentary Election will be held in February 2026, and no one will be able to stop it.”

He further urged that no individual or group should stand against the election in the interests of democracy and independence. He noted that an electoral atmosphere has already spread across the country, and the BNP aspires to see the polls conducted in a peaceful environment.

Citing the Constitution, he remarked: “Article 65(2) clearly defines how the elections must be conducted.”

The conference was presided over by Dr Md Anwarul Haque, Convener of the District BNP, and moderated by Dr Rafiqul Islam Hilali, Member Secretary.

Attendees included:

It is noteworthy that the last Netrokona District BNP conference was held on 25 October 2014.

This year’s gathering, after a decade, highlighted the BNP’s renewed focus on safeguarding voting rights and preparing for the 2026 national elections.
