Petrol Dispute at Pump Leaves Young Man Dead

A tragic incident unfolded at the Taj Filling Station in Jhenaidah city on Saturday evening, when an argument over petrol escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man. The incident occurred at around 9:00 pm, according to local authorities.

The deceased, Nirab Hossain, was the son of Alimur Biswas from Badurgacha village in Kaliganj Upazila. Following the incident, three petrol station workers — Nasim Hossain, Ramizul Islam, and Daud — were taken into custody by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for questioning.

Sequence of Events

According to Nirab’s friends, he and a companion arrived at the Taj Filling Station near the city’s bus terminal on a motorcycle to purchase petrol late in the evening. The station staff informed them that the pump was closed and no petrol was available. After visiting another station without success, they returned to the Taj Filling Station, only to notice that petrol was now being sold in bottles.

The friends reportedly confronted the workers, questioning why petrol had been denied earlier and was now being sold in bottles. The disagreement quickly escalated, leading to a physical altercation in which Nirab was assaulted by the station workers. Feeling unwell afterwards, he returned home, but his condition deteriorated rapidly. He was rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.

Dr Sabysachi Pal Suman, the attending physician at the hospital, noted that Nirab had sustained multiple injuries to his head and ears, indicative of blunt force trauma.

Responses from Authorities

The petrol station owner, Harun or Rashid, who was in Dhaka at the time, stated, “I have heard about an incident at the station, but I am not yet aware of the full circumstances.”

Additional Superintendent of Police and Jhenaidah RAB-6 Commander, Mehedi Imran Siddiqui, confirmed that the argument escalated into a physical confrontation. “The young man who had come to buy petrol succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital. The three workers involved are currently in RAB custody. Further details will emerge as the investigation progresses,” he said.
