Phil Hughes’ Anniversary Brings Raman Lamba Back into Memory

It has been eleven years since Phil Hughes passed away in one of cricket’s most tragic moments. Struck by a bouncer at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 25 November 2014, just days before his 26th birthday, Hughes collapsed on the field and never recovered. His death shocked the cricketing world, and his loss led to significant changes in player safety, including improved helmets and concussion substitutes.

Hughes’ memory, preserved with a bronze plaque at the SCG, reminds players and fans alike of his immense talent and tragic fate. Yet, as we reflect on Hughes, another story from Dhaka comes to mind—Raman Lamba, who died in 1998 while fielding at forward short leg in the Dhaka Premier Cricket League. Unlike Hughes, Lamba survived for three days before succumbing to his injuries, but his passing left a similar void in the cricket community.

Lamba’s impact on Dhaka cricket cannot be overstated. His presence in local leagues brought energy and excitement to the stadium, and he inspired a generation of cricketers. Despite this, Dhaka has yet to properly honour Lamba’s memory, lacking even a simple plaque at the ground where he suffered his fatal injury.

The tragedies of Hughes and Lamba, though separated by geography and time, are linked by their dedication to cricket and the inherent risks of the sport. While Hughes’ legacy is formally celebrated, Lamba’s contribution remains largely in memory, a story told among cricket enthusiasts.

Their stories highlight the risks close-in fielders face and the enduring impact such losses have on the cricketing world. As the cricket community remembers Hughes, it is equally important to acknowledge Lamba, who remains a legendary figure in Dhaka cricket. The legacies of these players serve as a sobering reminder of cricket’s dangers and the sacrifices made in pursuit of the game.
