Police Detain Girlfriend in Murder of Jashore Businessman

The investigation into the brutal slaying of Rana Pratap Bairagi, a 38-year-old businessman in Jashore, has taken a dramatic turn following the detention of a female associate. On Tuesday afternoon, the victim’s father, Tushar Kanti Bairagi, formally initiated legal proceedings at Monirampur Police Station, filing a murder case against several unidentified individuals.

In a swift response, law enforcement officials detained Jhumur Mondal, described as a close acquaintance of the deceased, for intensive interrogation. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rajiullah Khan confirmed that Jhumur, who reportedly works at a local beauty parlour, is being treated as a person of interest due to her presence at the crime scene shortly before the attack.

A Sophisticated Ambush

The victim’s father has provided a chilling account of Rana’s final moments, suggesting the murder was a coordinated “hit.” Rana, an academic high-achiever who held an MA in English from Bagerhat Government College, had abandoned any previous political leanings to focus on his ice-manufacturing business.

On Monday evening, Jhumur allegedly visited Rana at his ice factory at Kapalia Bazaar. Following their brief encounter, two unidentified men on a motorcycle arrived to speak with him. Shortly after they left, Rana was seen walking toward the beauty parlour where Jhumur worked. It was during this walk that he was intercepted in a narrow alley and hacked to death by assailants who fled the scene on a motorcycle.

Business Turf War or Honey Trap?

While the detention of Jhumur suggests a potential “honey trap” plot, Rana’s wife, Seema Bairagi, believes the motive is rooted in a cut-throat business rivalry. She claimed that her husband had been living under a shadow of fear since opening his ice factory.

“He often mentioned that he was in danger,” Seema revealed. “A rival ice factory owner in Kapalia Bazaar viewed my husband’s success as a personal threat and had reportedly tried to hire contract killers in the past to eliminate the competition.”
