Police Hit the Streets in New Uniforms

Members of the Bangladesh Police have started wearing new uniforms. From Saturday (15 November), the new uniforms have been implemented in all metropolitan police units across the country, including the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. District police have not yet received the new uniforms, but they will be provided gradually, according to police officials.

Following demands for police reform and uniform changes, the caretaker government approved new uniforms. The metropolitan police have received iron-colored uniforms. Specialized units, including the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Tourist Police, Highway Police, and Naval Police, will also use these new uniforms.

Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, stated that the new uniforms have been launched in all metropolitan areas and all personnel will gradually receive them.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the Police Headquarters Media and Public Relations Division, A H M Shahadat Hossain, said that district and range police will also gradually adopt the new uniforms. However, the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and Special Protection Battalion (SPBN) will retain their existing uniforms.

Earlier, Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury mentioned that the decision to change uniforms has been made. Three types of uniforms have been selected for the police, RAB, and Ansar. Implementation will be gradual and cannot be done all at once.

The caretaker government hopes that the new uniforms will also bring a change in the mindset of police personnel. Police reform initiatives are underway, including the formation of an independent Police Commission.
