The police will deploy 40,000 body-worn cameras to ensure security during the upcoming national election. The interim government has planned to procure these devices, according to Foize Tayeb Ahmed, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting on Saturday (9 August) at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. The meeting was attended by Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Special Assistants Khoda Baks Chowdhury and Foize Tayeb Ahmed.
This information was announced in a press release from the Chief Adviser’s office.
Procurement and Training Plans
Foize Tayeb Ahmed stated, “The procurement process for the body cameras is nearly finalised. We aim to acquire these cameras by mid-October, before the election, so that police personnel can receive proper training on their AI features and other functionalities.”
He added, “We have contacted three manufacturers from Germany, China, and Thailand to supply the cameras. These devices will be worn by police officers on their chests while performing election duties.
Chief Adviser’s Directives
At the meeting, Chief Adviser Dr Yunus instructed the concerned officials to expedite the procurement process and ensure comprehensive training for police officers on the use of the body cameras.
He emphasised, “Our goal is to guarantee the most impartial, peaceful, and secure voting process in the history of our elections. We must do whatever is necessary to achieve this.
This initiative aims to enhance transparency and accountability during the election period by equipping police officers with advanced body-worn cameras.
