Political Sacrifice Claims Spark Fury in Rangpur

A prominent leader of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has ignited a firestorm of controversy after a video surfaced online in which he compares a contemporary political decision to the sacred sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS). ATM Azam Khan, the Ameer of Rangpur City Jamaat and a previously prospective parliamentary candidate, is facing intense public backlash for suggesting that his political withdrawal was a “greater sacrifice” than that mentioned in religious scripture.

The Context of the Remarks

The incident occurred during an exchange meeting on 8 January in the Kadamtala area of Pirgacha, Rangpur. The meeting was held to consolidate support for Akhtar Hossain, the Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), who is contesting the upcoming elections as part of an 11-party alliance.

Azam Khan had been the primary nominee for the Rangpur-4 constituency. However, following a strategic alliance between Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP, the seat was conceded to Hossain, forcing Khan to relinquish his candidacy.

The Controversial Comparison

In the video footage, which lasts approximately 85 seconds, Khan recounts a telephone conversation he allegedly had with his party’s central leadership on the morning of 28 October. According to his account, a senior leader informed him that he was being “sacrificed” for the sake of the alliance.

Khan claims he then asked:

“Is this sacrifice comparable to that of Prophet Ibrahim’s son, Ishmael (AS)?”

He alleges the central leader responded:

“Yes, it is even greater than that. Ibrahim (AS) went to sacrifice his son for the satisfaction of Allah, but in the end, a sheep was sacrificed instead of a human. Your sacrifice involves the political will of hundreds of thousands of men and women in Pirgacha-Kaunia. That is why this sacrifice is greater.”

Khan concluded the anecdote by stating he accepted this explanation with a “Alhamdulillah.”

Widespread Condemnation

The dissemination of this video has triggered an outpouring of anger across social media platforms. Critics argue that the comparison is not only intellectually flawed but constitutes a grave insult to religious sentiments. Religious scholars and members of the public have pointed out that equating the spiritual obedience of a Prophet to a mundane political seat-sharing agreement is a dangerous overreach.

Many commentators have labelled the remarks as “blasphemous,” asserting that using sacred narratives to validate political manoeuvres demeans the faith. Despite the mounting pressure, the central leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami has yet to issue a formal clarification regarding whether such a comparison was actually endorsed by the party’s headquarters.

Azam Khan, however, remained defiant in the video, urging his supporters to “turn sorrow into strength” and view the alliance’s decision as a necessary challenge for the survival of the movement.
