Chandpur District Commissioner (DC) Md. Nazmul Islam Sarkar has issued a stern warning that anyone delivering political speeches during religious gatherings, specifically waz mahfils, will face immediate arrest and fines. He made the remarks on Thursday morning while addressing a consultation meeting at the Hajiganj Upazila Parishad auditorium.
The DC emphasised that the administration will adopt a zero-tolerance policy regarding the misuse of religious platforms for political purposes. “If any political statements are made during a waz mahfil, the individuals involved will be arrested without delay. There will be no exceptions,” he stated.
To ensure strict enforcement, he instructed Hajiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Ibne Al Zayed Hossain to closely monitor religious events and report any violations immediately.
“This directive aims to prevent a return to disorder or instability in our district,” the DC added. He further underscored the administration’s commitment to maintaining a fair and neutral electoral environment, noting that religious gatherings should never be exploited for electioneering or propaganda.
He warned that anyone attempting to mislead the public or incite unrest under the guise of religious sermons would face stringent legal consequences.
In an interview with The Daily Star, DC Sarkar revealed that over the past week, he had received six to seven complaints regarding political speeches delivered at waz mahfils. During his visit to Hajiganj, similar concerns were raised by local residents and officials.
“I have issued this clear warning to ensure that electoral conduct rules are not violated,” he said, stressing that the administration is determined to uphold both law and order as well as the integrity of the upcoming election process.
The DC’s warning reflects ongoing efforts to separate religious platforms from political influence, ensuring that voters receive unbiased information and that communal harmony is preserved during the election period. Local authorities have been instructed to maintain vigilance at all religious gatherings and to take immediate action against any breaches of the electoral code.
