Political Tensions at Cricket Press Conference: How Indian Coach Handled It

In April, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir sparked military tensions between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, raising uncertainty over whether the two sides would face each other in the Asia Cup. That uncertainty has now been resolved, as both teams are set to clash today (Sunday) in what promises to be an exciting encounter, featuring Suryakumar Yadav and Salman Ali Agar.

Ahead of the match, the Indian camp had to navigate politically charged questions during a press conference, which required a tactful approach from the coaching staff.

India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Daskat, represented the team at the pre-match press conference on Saturday. Naturally, media discussions centred around India’s match against Pakistan. To deflect political tensions, the Indian team chose to send the foreign coach to address the questions.

From the outset, Ryan appealed to the media to keep ongoing political sentiments and emotions aside. Yet, the conference inevitably gravitated towards political discussions, overshadowing cricket itself.

He emphasised:“We are aware that these issues influence players’ mindsets. Naturally, they feel empathy towards the general public of India. In our dressing room meetings, we have discussed this. While conscious of public sentiment, the players must perform for their country. Regardless of external circumstances, they need to remain professional and focused on the game.”

Repeatedly, questions related to the political tensions between India and Pakistan arose. Ryan responded carefully, also referencing guidance from India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir:“Coach Gambhir has reminded us that now is the time to display professionalism. Worrying about factors beyond our control won’t help. Our focus must remain on cricket. Players will represent the country and its feelings through their performance on the field.”

The 55-year-old former Dutch all-rounder added:“Many have emphasised keeping sports and politics separate. We hope our cricket will reflect how responsible our players are towards their country. We will abide by the decisions of the Board and central government. This is a very sensitive issue. The sentiments of the country are shared by the players too. There has been uncertainty surrounding the Asia Cup for a long time. That we are here and playing was something few could have imagined.”
